Post-COVID Ramp-Up Series: Considerations for a Successful Reopening

Written with Jennifer Elder, CPA, CSP—How are you ramping up? Science, accounting, and psychological perspectives offer guidance in creating a post COVID ramp-up plan.

As the hope of COVID coming to an end has made its appearance, now is not the time to relax. Now is the time for all good business leaders to proactively create a post-COVID plan. We owe it to ourselves, our employees, our customers, and our community.

What is your post COVID plan? What are your next steps? Are they clear? Have you addressed all the intertwined factors required to get to the NEXT NORMAL?

To be successful in your transition, it is essential to consider both people and process. One cannot exist effectively without the other.

The journey to a strong transition plan begins by asking yourself or your organization two questions. “Where are we now?” “Where do we want to end up?” and “What is the most effective path to get there?”

COVID fatigue is real. It’s no mystery why we are so tired. The answers can be found in science and psychology.

Even if we retained the same jobs, everything was suddenly different. We communicated differently, we worked differently, and we made money differently. Workplaces were transformed. This was exhausting mentally, physically, socially, spiritually, and financially. Learning to work remotely and in socially distanced protocols, speaking through masks or virtual screens, all contributed to fatigue.

When COVID first hit in March 2020, we were taken by surprise. This was a crisis in life and business, affecting us locally and globally. Who could have predicted this in these prolonged crisis circumstances as they created their day-to-day business planning?

It used to be that sound planning prevented failure by reducing uncertainty. This is no long the case unless you change the method of planning. One plan does not fit all crises.

Stayed tuned for more on post-COVID planning strategies.
